Ensemble Modeling of the Ocean (MEOcean)

The research conducted by the MEOcean team builds on the research carried out by the MEOM team between 1992 and 2025. Among these, the use of ensemble ocean simulations and stochastic components to enhance deterministic models has spread throughout the scientific community in France and beyond. Some of these mature developments have materialized in the community codes we use or contribute to, in the collaborations that have flourished around these methodologies, and in their implementation for the study of phenomena such as the natural intrinsic stochasticity of ocean variability, the interpretation of observations, or data inversion/assimilation in the Bayesian framework.

Our plan is to continue our research in the directions described in more detail below in the description of the research activities, shifting our activities in the following directions : (i) strengthening regional studies that incorporate a dimension of offshore-coastal oceanography that has been little addressed to date, (ii) a shift towards more numerically parsimonious approaches, both for simulations and for studies based on model-observation synergies, and (iii) an opening up to applications in the field of ocean sciences for sustainability, in connection with new disciplinary fields and communities, particularly in the Global South.
