Nitrogen cycling in alpine ecosystems

---
Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient for life on Earth. Yet, when in excess, it can have deleterious effects on the environment (e.g., soil and water acidification, loss of biodiversity, eutrophication). In remote ecosystems, sources of N can be either anthropogenic (e.g., atmospheric N deposition, pastoralism, tourism) or environmental (e.g., in situ production, snowmelt, glacier melt). But which ones are responsible for the observed eutrophication of alpine ecosystems? And what become of the excess N? In this seminar, I will present how the isotopic composition (D17O, d18O, d15N) of nitrate (NO3-) improves our understanding of N cycling, with specific focus on alpine ecosystems.
