CARE International Joint Laboratory (Asian Center for Water Research) has been conducting research for 10 years on the pollution flows of organic matter and nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) from the Ho Chi Minh Megacity in southern Vietnam. This large Southeast Asian city is undergoing rapid economic and demographic expansion (9 millions inhabitants in 2020). With less than 15% of domestic urban water collected and treated, the city has a lasting impact on the quality of the Saigon River and its estuary under tropical climat. The level of nutrients and eutrophication are extreme with regular phytoplankton blooms in the dry season and oxygenation rates at their lowest, close to anoxia. These conditions also enhance the emission of GEGs (CO2, CH4, N20) from urban canals and river. The hydrodynamic and biogeochemical model C-GEM was implemented to find out the main biological processes involved in nutrients and carbon cycling. The model was used for the demographic projection of HCMC in 2030 by testing scenarios of implementation of new wastewater treatments plans in order to improve the water quality of the Saigon River. This talk will give an overview of the challenges of urban water quality management that megacities in emmerging countries have to face at present and in the near futur.
