---
On 16 December, the SWOT satellite, whose mission is co-sponsored by CNES and NASA, was successfully launched from the Vandenberg military base in California. This new instrument should measure the elevation of the Earth's liquid surfaces (oceans, lakes, rivers, estuaries, etc.) at an unprecedented spatial resolution. The data it will collect over the next few years should provide a better understanding of heat, carbon and nutrient exchange in the global ocean. It will also allow direct observation of the stocks and variability of continental waters, providing key information for watershed management. It should also provide a better understanding of the physical processes at work in coastal regions where a growing proportion of the world's population is concentrated. In this talk, we will present the technological, scientific and societal challenges of the SWOT mission. In particular, we will explain what data products will be available and how they will be prepared and disseminated. We will take the opportunity to explain how the scientific support of satellite missions is generally organized, and what role our communities can play in this process.
