Here we present the concept and the capabilities of the Instructed Glacier Model (IGM), a new 3D glacier evolution model that is computationally-efficient and suitable for data assimilation thanks to the combined used of physics-informed deep-learning, automatic differentiation, and graphics processing units. As an illustration, we show a new inversion of the ice thickness distribution of the Alps based on observed ice velocities, followed by a forward prognostic simulation of ice thickness evolution until 2050 to estimate the committed loss of ice regardless of the climate trajectory.
