InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) Statement : Climate Change and Biodiversity : Interlinkages and policy options

Climate change and biodiversity decline are major challenges of our time. Both are mainly caused by human activities, with profound consequences for the people and ecosystems on which we depend.

In 2021 and 2022, the major UN conferences on biodiversity (COP15) and climate change (COP26) will be held, providing an opportunity for governments to draw international attention to the interconnection between climate change and biodiversity. However, this is not guaranteed and some climate actions could undermine biodiversity targets and conservation actions.

In this context, the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) has issued the statement "Climate Change and Biodiversity : Interlinkages and policy options", to raise awareness of the interdependencies between climate, climate action and biodiversity. It contains recommendations and key policy principles to underpin synergistic action on climate and biodiversity.

The IAP statement has been endorsed by over 80 academies, including the Global Young Academy, to which IGE researcher Ignacio Palomo belongs. IPA harnesses the expertise of the world’s greatest scientific minds to advance sound policy, improve public health, promote excellence in science education and achieve other critical development goals.
