Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice project

The European project Beyond EPICA Oldest Ice (BE-OI) aims to obtain an ice core covering the last million and a half years and the mid-Pleistocene transition (MPT, between 1.2 and 0.9 million years ago) which led to a change from 40,000 to 100,000 years of glacial-interglacial cyclicity and a sharp increase in the amplitude of cycles. A high-resolution glacial record of climates older than 800,000 years will help constrain the causes of MPT and long-term feedbacks between the carbon cycle and climate.
