Trace metals concentrations in the white hard clam Meretrix lyrata and its environment near Sai Gon-Dong Nai River estuary

This study aims to determine some trace metals concentrations in the white hard clam which is feeding near Sai Gon-Dong Nai River estuary. To understand the metal pollution in the environment as well as control metal concentrations in one of the most popular seafood in Southern Vietnam, the trace metals bioaccumulation in this clam is needed to estimate. Moreover, those metals in Gills (G), Digestive Gland (DG) and the Remainder (R) of this clam is also analyzed to find the way to reduce the risk for clam consumer. White hard clam Meretrix lyrata was sampled at three farms located in Can Thanh and Dong Hoa villages of Can Gio District (The left side of Sai Gon-Dong Nai River estuary) and Tan Thanh seashore in Tien Giang province (The right side). Various sizes of clam were collected which is corresponding with four groups including (1) Tiny - under 12 month-olds ; (2) Small - from 12 to 18 month-olds ; (3) Medium - from 18 to 24 month-olds ; and (4) Big - Over 24 month-olds. Whole body samples and dissection samples were measured size and weight before processing the metal analysis procedure using ICP-MS. The monitoring results will be assessed and used to set up some experiments to understand more deeply about metals behavior in clam Meretrix lyrata.
