Monitoring bedload flux in rivers is a key factor for studying fluvial morphodynamics. This presentation addresses the topic of passive acoustic monitoring of bedload transport in rivers with hydrophones. Hydrophones deployed in the river can detect the self-generated noise (SGN) of bedload particles as they impact each other or the riverbed. This promising technique offers a low-cost monitoring tool for bedload transport in rivers. Several studies have continuously monitored bedload flux in rivers by measuring the bedload particles' SGN with fixed-bank hydrophones. However, because each river has its own acoustic properties, this method is still dependent on calibration with direct bedload sampling. After our intensive field measurements on different rivers and development of new acoustic signal processing approaches, we present a methodology to monitor river bedload flux independent of any bedload physical sampling calibration procedures. We tested the method on the Drac and the Romanche rivers and validated the results with bathymetric survey data.
